Canyon City: Environment concept for a fantasy mmo
Finally finished my new portfolio piece :)

Tuesday 4 September 2012

Canyon City wip
Here is a portfolio piece I am currently working on. Its part of the mmo series of concept art I did for my last university project. My goal with this concept was to have a large scene establishing shot of a canyon based city with a consistent use of architecture throughout. The architecture is primarily based of Indian/Hindu style architecture.

There's more progress shots in my CA thread : http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=130388&page=7 Which is down atm due to their maintenance.

With my current version I decided everything was getting too cramped so I opened the composition, and also the back ground was a bit dull, the composition was leading up to it but with nothing as a pay off so I had the idea there was some kind of settlement there. With more mountains suggested in the background to add depth.

Going to work the middle ground and the small details from this point. The figures I just quickly indicated, Ill leave them until last they are just a reference point for scale for now. P.s you can see my perspective lines in this one as I forgot to turn them off when saving.

Halls of the Dead Final version. See previous post for development work and explanation of the design :)

Thumbnails - Halls of the Dead

Initial Line work
Work in progress

I'm currently working on the Dungeons and Dragons art test (Art Test link) I decided to go with the environment test to design the Halls of the Dead. This is due to wanting to include more architecture work in my portfolio/improving my skills at depicting it, and it sounded like a challenging project that would push my skills.

I'm going for a 15th century vibe with the design whilst bring in elements of the back story such as the Skulls and symbol for the God of the Halls which is a skeletal arm holding judgement scales. From what I understand the house is meant to represent a place of worship that is welcoming of death/is accepting of death.

I thought it would be cool to have a converted building that is welcoming due to its aesthetics whilst contrasting it with the bones and symbolism of the skull hand holding the judgement scales (eventually I want to look like they have been strapped to the building). Also wanted a warm colour scheme rather than a cliché cool colour scheme generally used when depicting death/horror type scenes. I feel warm colours are more welcoming, which seemed fitting to the concept.

Currently I am working towards removing the line work so that the final picture is a finished painterly look. Really trying to push my lighting and approaching this work in a more methodical manner than to what I usually do, such as working on flat colours, then adding ambient occlusion, with key lighting following, and so on. Which I hope will improve the overall quality of my work.

The Fairy Chieftain

The Chieftain of the Fairies* is usually the biggest and strongest of the Fairy folk. They prove their worth in many ways such as the killing and eating of the hearts of birds (a natural hunter of Fairies) often using the feather coat of the birds as symbols of power**, challenging and beating the current Chieftain, as well as prowess in War and Politics. Often in times of peace the ruling families via for control of the position through the nomination of champions who go forth and do battle in an often brutal tournament.

*Fairies are half bird half human creatures, their springy legs allow them to hop around and run quickly great for grabbing those pesky birds!
** Often this give the illusion the Fairies have wings when they are bounding from branch to branch. In reality the fairy is a flightless creature.

The Baron - I know cliche, Im rubbish at naming characters ;p
This is a character Ive done as part of a mini series I plan to do for a job application :)

My goal was to create an Alien character in a steampunk western type of universe. I also wanted him to be more of an anti hero/villain rather than a good guy.

Sunday 27 May 2012

This is a Punk Girl character in some kind of post apoc world I guess, Ive been working on this weekend. Now that my portfolio, uni work etc is handed in, nice to do some personal art for a change.

Done on my bamboo whilst I wait for my replacement tablet to arrive (getting an Intuos5 medium)

Sci fi concept art piece I have been working on for my portfolio trying to work in sets. So this is part of the Sci Fi rts ones I have done before. Tried to keep it fairly loose was making it too tight which I guess would be bad for concept art since it puts clients off of suggesting changes.

A Lizard study I did yesterday.

Dreamscape
Hi everyone, so my work for Warner Brothers/Alex Byrne finished earlier than expected so I had some free time for a change. Decided to enter this months Gnomon Competition.

The theme for this month is Dreamscape, my idea for this was that an Emperor or a King of some kind is looking on at his dream palace being built :)

Architecture is one of my weakest points, so the only way to improve it is to make myself do paintings like this. Doing the Gnomon competition is always cool as it challenges you to do something thats out of your comfort zone, well atleast for me, so I learned a lot from this :)

First Page double spread

Front and Back cover

Fourth page double spread

Copyright and title page

These are my 'Final' Macmillan children's book spreads, my book is an adaption of 'The Queens Bee' by the Brothers Grimm. I say 'Final' as I will most likely go back and improve these once I have the time before the final hand in.

I had to get a lot of work done recently as I will be going down to London on Wednesday to official start working with Alexandre Byrne, the oscar winning costume designer. Should be a great learning experience :)

Just finishing up my dissertation now as well, im on my 7th draft, arghhh. Definitely do not want to go into writing lol

Sunday 11 March 2012

Timeline illustration I did for my facebook page that I posted recently.

I took down some of my macmillan stuff, shouldn't really be showing it until after judging I guess haha Its progressing well, Ive finished my final dummy book, and Im just about to finish my front and back cover final illustration. I will be then doing 3 of the spreads for the book. Hoping to finish it by the end of the week, since I have a lot of work to do and a massive opportunity just came up so trying to keep up with my self imposed schedule :)

Im using my twitter page a lot more now (well at least for me lol) never really understood the program but my friend Nicky said its good for making contacts and after giving it more of a chance that seems to be true.

My twitter name is @scriar if anyones interested.

The 2 older brothers

Currently starting off my designs for the Macmillan children’s book competition. This year Ive decided rather than write my own story to adapt one of the Grimm brother stories. Ive chosen ‘The Queen Bee’ due to how open the story is to interpretation.

These are my initial designs for the 2 older brothers in the story, literally the only description of them is that there’s 2, they are older, and brothers, lol You can also probably gather from the story they are brutish and bit of a douche, so I kept this in mind whilst doing the initial designs. I’m thinking of developing number 4 and 7 at the moment.

Worth noting I guess that I also did a bunch of head, and initial pencil sketches before this stage. So I knew I wanted to go in a 'cartoony' direction for this project. I'm hoping to have something similar to the quality of Jonny Duddles 'The Pirate Catcher' Which I brought recently, really like the illustrations, design of the book and story. I don't think I would of done Macmillan this year if I hadn't seen this book, it definitely tipped me over the fence so to speak lol
